Delighted to be a member of the Athlone No.1 Gun Battery committee which is ably led by Shay Hamilton. Over the years significant conservation progress has been made on this very important heritage structure in Athlone. This is the last remaining Gun Battery in the Town. The ongoing support from Melanie McQuaide WCC Heritage Officer, Urban Regeneration Project Team and the full suite of professionals such as Archaeologists and Conservation Architects is very much appreciated.
The energetic committee recognises the fact that this site is of vital importance to the public through education and as a tourist destination. The opportunities of creating a Historical Military Trail by the inclusion of this site (once work is completed) in a walking tour with Custume Barracks and Athlone Castle will be of great benefit to the town.
