In 2022 Westmeath County Council had planned to pilot a Bike for Hire Scheme in Mullingar in preparation for the All Ireland Fleadh. I am glad to say that following my intervention as Chairman of Westmeath County Council it was agreed to also roll out this Bike for Hire Scheme in Athlone at the same time.
Since its introduction the level of bike for hire usage in Athlone has far surpassed expectations and even that of Mullingar. Extra bike stations have been provided throughout the town and in particular near the Athlone Railway Station to cater for the increasing demand. Long may this continue.
