“In the Footsteps of History” is the title of our second series of videos celebrating our heritage in the townlands of Mount Temple / Baylin. The Holy Trinity Church and graveyard can be found in the core of Mount Temple village and is the location of the former medieval parish church of Ballyloughloe, an upright portion of which survives today above ground.
At some later stage, probably in the eighteenth century a new second church was constructed some 9 meters to the west of the visible portion of the medieval church. This later Church of Ireland church was used for worship until 1955. The church and graveyard are owned by the Church of Ireland, the Athlone Union of Parishes.
Sincere thanks to the marvellous voluntary & financial support from the local community in helping to tidy up this graveyard and making it accessible to the public.
Also thanks to Creative Ireland & Westmeath County Council for their financial support towards this video. The professional expertise from Bailey & Blake and Gort Archaeology – Archaeological & Cultural Heritage Consultants in producing and developing this video was fantastic. The Genealogy Officer at Dun Na Si Moate Amenity & Heritage Park was a marvellous help. This is a Mount Temple Holy Trinity Graveyard Group creation.
